Anyone can learn a new language, at any time. And by learning Spanish, you open the door to the minds, hearts and histories of hundreds of millions of people!

What are your rates?

I require a minimum of six months commitment and programs start at $1500. But first, we have a discussion so I can learn about you and see how I can help. Book a consultation above.

Working with a professional tutor is invaluable. After more than 15 years teaching and learning languages, I can say that one-on-one sessions with a language teacher are of enormous benefit; they get you speaking and comprehending faster.

*Professionals - get your classes subsidized or covered by work! If you need to learn Spanish for work and you've not had this discussion with your employer - ask if they will cover your Spanish lessons. We'll discuss individually.

How often should I take class?

This depends on your time, finances, urgency, goals and interest. There is a simple rule in learning a language: the more we actively and effectively practice, the faster we learn. So, when working one-on-one with a good language teacher, the more sessions you have, the faster you will learn. "Actively" and "effectively" are the key words. If you simply sit and watch a telenovela everyday for six months, you will learn many things, but you will not be able to hold a conversation in Spanish. If you work with a good language teacher everyday for six months, you will be nearly proficient.

Layered on this rule is Reality: adults have jobs, family, responsibilities, financial limitations. So it may not be possible to take class as frequently as we would like. Unless we have a deadline, that's okay! We will still learn Spanish! We just have to accept that it won't be as fast as we would like.

Can adults learn a new language?

Of course! I am so passionate about teaching language to adults! Yes, there is research that will say the best time to learn a language is before age 12; but this research only focused on a few aspects of language learning and the study was narrow in scope.

It is nonsense to say that adults can't learn language; I can give you a thousand examples, including myself. If you have great teachers, a great method, good observation skills, and the desire - that is a formula for success. You can become fluent in another language (or two or three) and you can greatly reduce your "accent." What is accent? Listen to Australians, people from the U.S., England, Ireland - we are fluent in English and we all have accents. That's not to mention the great variety within countries, and all the other countries that speak English. What is important is that you understand and be understood. To that end, as I write elsewhere, focus on your vowels. Vowels are critical in all languages; a different vowel sandwiched between the same two consonants could be the difference between "knee" and "egg."

Adults have all kinds of life skills and knowledge that can help them learn languages. They will certainly learn it lightyears faster than they learned their first language(s)! And if you didn't know this yet - the brain is plastic. We can in fact create new neuronal connections in our brain and grow new brain cells. So the only thing standing in the way is yourself. Come on in.

Why should I learn another language?

The benefits are endless. There are practical benefits - earning a higher salary, expanding career opportunities, changing careers, being able to travel easier and safer, mental health and social benefits of socializing with new people and challenging your brain, the personal benefits of challenging yourself, making a commitment and humbling yourself to learn a new language and learn to make mistakes, etc.

For me, the most important aspect is that each language opens a whole world to you. Culture goes way beyond and way deeper than music, food and clothes. It encompasses a set of values, a specific history and a way of perceiving the world, and it is embedded in language. Aimé Césaire said, "In the scales of knowledge, all the museums in the world will never weigh so much as one spark of human sympathy." Learning another language has the potential to develop sparks of human sympathy. Then we can create real warmth in the world.
