Anyone can learn a new language, at any time. And by learning Spanish, you open the door to the minds, hearts and histories of hundreds of millions of people! Spanish is the established language of 35 countries in the world and spoken by 427 million people as a first language. Recent reports found that the U.S. has the 2nd largest population of Spanish speakers after Mexico. With 41 million native speakers and an estimated 11.6 million bilinguals, the U.S. surpasses Spain and Colombia. Spanish is also the 3rd most commonly used language on the internet.
Who can learn?

Anyone! You are never too old to learn a language. A common belief is that it is very difficult to learn a language after the age of 12. While this may be the easiest time to absorb new sounds and patterns, the human brain is "plastic" - which means it can continue to form new neurons and new neuronal connections throughout life. You can learn a language at any age. In fact, learning a new language is one of the best ways to keep your brain healthy, not to mention the opportunities it affords to travel, to advance in your job or secure a new career, to meet new people or even to finally talk to your neighbors!
Who should learn Spanish?

As a lover of languages, I think everyone can benefit from learning a new language. But if you live in any city in the U.S. and you work either in a school or in healthcare, Spanish may be a necessity to communicate with parents, students or patients. I work mainly with healthcare professionals - nurse practitioners, physician assistants, speech and physical therapists, nurse aides and doctors. These professions depend on good communicative rapport with their patients, and learning Spanish can significantly improve this relationship.
Why online?

-
Class at your own pace and schedule. Many healthcare professionals, lawyers, and social workers have erratic and/or long hours. It can be nearly impossible to commit to a class at a local community center or college. With online learning one-on-one with me as your tutor, you set the frequency of lessons and you have the option of picking a fixed time or scheduling class by class. And if you're too tired after a night shift, I have a flexible cancellation policy to fit your needs.

-
Save money. Have you ever paid tuition for a semester class and then had to miss 3 or 4 sessions? With online learning, you pay only for the classes you take, so all your money goes toward your learning. It also cuts overhead costs so I can keep my rates lower.

-
Unique features. The chat feature in an online platform allows me to immediately give you text in addition to speech. For many learners, reading is the skill that comes easiest. I use the chat feature to integrate your reading and listening skills and to improve your pronunciation skills. Online platforms also provide a screen share option, where I can instantly turn my screen into a digital blackboard.
-
Relaxed environment. Many people are intimidated, shy, nervous and/or anxious about learning a language. An online one-on-one class is the perfect way to start! You can learn from the comfort of your own home (or office or favorite coffee shop), in a familiar setting, with a compassionate and patient tutor (me!). Of course, I will encourage and discuss with you how to get out there and practice your skills in the real world, but one-on-one online sessions are an optimal base camp to progress in your grammar, vocabulary, cultural understanding and conversational fluency without fear, pressure or embarrassment.

I specialize in taking adult learners from zero to conversationally proficient, and I serve as a cultural broker. If you are an English speaker, I understand exactly which areas will present challenges to you, both linguistically and culturally. I take you step by step through an individualized curriculum in an all-Spanish environment that builds a strong foundation. Through ten years of teaching experience, as well as my own experience learning a variety of languages, I know how to balance language elements (pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, sociocultural context) and language skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking). For those in healthcare, I have 100 hours of training in medical interpreting and will help you both to communicate with your patients and to understand the role of interpreters.
For any learner starting from scratch or up to an intermediate level, I will work with you to become conversationally proficient. If you are already at an advanced level, I suggest you look for specialized classes in literature at your local college or adult education center. I also suggest you travel! If you are learning for business purposes, other tutors may be a better fit. You can find other online tutors or classes through an internet search.
